The 1999 GMC Suburban K2500 SLT is a heavy-duty, three-quarter-ton full-size SUV designed to combine substantial towing and hauling capabilities with the passenger capacity and comfort of a large family vehicle. Built on General Motors' GMT400 truck platform, the Suburban 2500 features body-on-frame construction, heavy-duty axles, eight-lug wheels, and reinforced chassis components intended for demanding utility applications. Its extended body accommodates three rows of seating while providing considerable cargo space, making it particularly well suited for transporting passengers, equipment, or towing large trailers. 1999 also marked the final model year of the GMC Suburban nameplate, which was replaced by the Yukon XL beginning with the 2000 model year.

Power is supplied by a 7.4-liter (454-cubic-inch) Vortec 7400 big-block V8 engine producing 290 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, paired with a heavy-duty 4L80-E four-speed automatic transmission. The Vortec 7400 features sequential multi-port fuel injection and a cast-iron block and cylinder heads, with its substantial low-RPM torque making it especially well suited for towing and hauling heavy loads. Power is delivered through the Auto-Trac four-wheel-drive system, which incorporates an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with selectable two-wheel-drive, automatic four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-drive high, and four-wheel-drive low modes. In automatic mode, the system monitors traction conditions and engages the front axle when additional traction is needed, allowing the vehicle to operate primarily in rear-wheel drive during normal conditions. A locking rear differential, 3.73 axle ratio, and off-road skid plates further enhance its utility and traction capabilities. Properly equipped Suburban 2500 models were capable of towing substantial trailers, with maximum ratings approaching 10,000 pounds depending on configuration.

As GMC's premium trim level for 1999, the SLT combines the Suburban's heavy-duty capabilities with an extensive selection of comfort and convenience equipment. This example features Marketing Option Package 3, the factory SLT equipment group incorporating ultrasoft leather front bucket seats, an AM/FM stereo with CD and cassette players, remote keyless entry, front and rear air conditioning, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and an electrochromic rearview mirror with compass and outside-temperature display. Additional equipment includes third-row seating, cruise control, dual power front seats, a full-length roof rack, running boards, and a towing package.
