The 2010 BMW X5 M is a high-performance luxury midsize SUV that combines sports-car level performance with everyday family utility. Codenamed the E70, the 2010 model year was the very first time BMW applied its racing-inspired "M" badge to an SUV, marking a major milestone for BMW's M division, and competing directly against heavy hitters like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged.

Engineered to defy its 2.4-ton weight, the X5 M offers performance that rivaled dedicated sports cars of its era. Power is produced by an S63 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 delivering 555 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, providing a 0-60 MPH time of 4.5 seconds, and an electrically-limited top speed of 155 MPH. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a reinforced 6-speed M Sport automatic transmission featuring steering-wheel-mounted aluminum paddle shifters.

To ensure the X5 M could handle curves like a BMW sedan, the M division packed the X5 M with advanced, track-tuned hardware. It became the first production M vehicle to feature all-wheel drive, known as the M xDrive AWD system. This system is heavily rear-biased to retain a traditional sports-car driving feel, while a torque-vectoring rear differential mechanically pushes power to the outside rear wheel during cornering to eliminate understeer.

The X5 M is also equipped with Electronic Damping Control (EDC) and Active Roll Stabilization, which flattened the body through tight turns and used a rear air-ride setup for self-leveling. Stopping power is provided by 15.6-inch front and 15.2-inch rear ventilated disc brakes.

Visually, the X5 M distinguished itself from a standard BMW X5 with aggressive, functional styling cues including massive front air intakes to cool the turbos, wider body fenders, quad exhaust tailpipes, and staggered 20-inch alloy wheels. The Interior features premium Merino leather upholstery, M-specific heated sport seats, an 8.8-inch iDrive navigation screen, a panoramic moonroof, and signature M-badge red and blue stitching on the steering wheel.
